Braddock Road Defeats Stafford 2-0 in Championship GameWakefield Park, Nov. 10, 2002 -- Doug Alcorn's Braddock Road "She-Devils" team won the High School Girls House Soccer League (HSGHSL) fall championship by defeating a scrappy team from Stafford coached by Dave McGinness.
Under the threatening skies of a mid-November afternoon, the She-Devils broke on top about 20 minutes into the game on a goal by Cawleen Cawley after a straigt run down the center. The She-Devils (8-2-0 regular season with 31 goals for and 15 against) scored the "coach's goal" in the second half with a perfectly placed pass by Cawley from the far right side to Maria Havinga, who tapped it in.
Goal keeper Rachael Wright, along with the rest of the She-Devils' defense, did an excellent job by shutting down Stafford's "Kittyeyes" -- the league's leading scorer with 22 goals and 5 assists. In an evenly matched contest, the Stafford team (7-1-2 regular season with 38 goals for and 19 against) had a number of chances, but was unable to finish.
Following the game, championship and finalist trophies were awarded to the players in front of many supportive family members, friends and fans.
