Stafford, Nov. 15, 2005 -- A Springfield Youth Club (SYC) U-19 girls soccer team coached by Jim Miller topped Brian Conaway's Braddock Road Youth Club (BRYC) team 4-2 to take the fall championship in the High School Girls House Soccer League (HSGHSL).

Ashley Houck scored a hat trick plus one for Springfield to lead her team to victory. Assists went to Samantha Esau (2). Holly Trip, Yohana Desta and Jill D.Souza. Scoring for Braddock Road were Katherine Daniels and Daphna Motro, who also had an assist on Daniels' goal. SYC went ahead in the first half, but BRYC tied it early in the second. SYC came back to go ahead, but BRYC tied it before Springfield scored the last two goals to cinch the victory. Top defenders for SYC were Becky Koenig, KateLebel and Sam Iliff, who had the unenviable task of marking BRYC's talented Motro.

The SYC team earned the right to compete for championship honors by defeating a BRYC team coached by Bob Coffin 2-1 in overtime in the first round and defeating a Stafford team coached by Michael Corey 4-3 in the semi-finals. Conaway's team made its way to the finals by beating a Vienna team coached by Jim Holt 3-0 in the first round and a Stafford team coached by Todd Grigsby 2-1 in the semis. Other first round results were Grigsby's Stafford team 5-0 over an SYC team coached by Don Payne and Corey's Stafford team over another Stafford team coached by Bob Santmyer, 4-1.

The HSGHSL is a recreational soccer league for high-school-age girls in grades 9 and above with teams from Springfield, Braddock Road, Vienna, Stafford and Winchester.
