SYC Bests BRYC 2-0 in Hard-Fought Battle to Take Spring 2007 HSGHSL TitleWakefield, June 10, 2007 -- A Springfield Youth Club (SYC) team coached by Gabriella Sideleau defeated a Braddock Road Youth Club (BRYC) team coached by Darell Oresky to take the High School Girls House Soccer League (HSGHSL) spring championship. The final score was 2-0 with the last goal scored with less than four minutes remaining.
Alayna Henby put SYC ahead with a hard shot in the 21st minute of the first half. BRYC threatened on a number of occasions throughout the game but couldn't put the ball in the net, thanks in large measure to outstanding goal play by SYC goalie Nikki Anderson, who was named most valuable player by Coach Sideleau. Other SYC defensive standouts included Nikki Sideleau, Elizabeth Waring, Jessica Galassi, Samantha Hodges, Morgan Stutz and Jimena Reyes.
SYC's final goal came in the 42nd minute of the second half off a corner kick by Ana Mostaghim that Henby headed toward the goal. On the blocked rebound, Jenny Gomez put the ball in the net -- her first goal of the season!
SYC, the fourth seed in the HSGHSL season-ending tourney, advanced to the championship game with a 6-2 victory over the number one seed, a BRYC team coached by Brian Conaway. Oresky's BRYC team, the number two seed, won its semi-final game by defeating Jerry Stillman's number three-seeded SYC team on penalty kicks (4-2) following a scoreless game and two similar overtime periods.
